Awarded Power Africa-USDA Productive Use of Energy Contract in Uganda
GPTech has been awarded the United States Department of Agriculture–Power Africa Partnership Activity Productive Use of Energy (PUE) in Uganda contract. Power Africa is a U.S. Government–led partnership that harnesses the collective resources of over 170 public and private sector partners to double access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. This project will advance off-grid energy solutions to improve the lives and livelihoods of rural and agricultural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, because most off-grid customers live in rural areas where agriculture is the predominant livelihood, the project aims to link energy access activities to farmers, especially female farmers.
GPTech will develop and deploy training and financing plans for agricultural cooperatives in Uganda to adopt PUE for modern agricultural practices and value addition technologies. Through inclusive community engagement and comprehensive planning, we will identify cooperatives and producer organizations that lack access to energy and wish to invest in PUE technology, but need technical assistance to do so. We will also link beneficiaries to USAID/Uganda activities (such as the Strategic Investments Activity and the Inclusive Agriculture Markets Activity) and to other U.S. Government–funded programs that can facilitate investment, such as Feed the Future. As part of this work, GPTech will develop training on applying for assistance from those programs.
GPTech is thrilled to build on its past experience in Uganda, which includes work under two USAID programs: the De-risking Pay-As-You-Go Solar Home Systems in Uganda Refugee Settlements grants program and the Northern Uganda Development of Enhanced Local Governance, Infrastructure and Livelihoods activity. Says Phillip Green, President of GPTech, “We are committed to supporting the Power Africa goal to add at least 30,000 megawatts of new electricity generation capacity and 60 million connections by 2030 with this project, specifically increasing the productive use of electricity.”
